How to measure siding for a house

Measure each rectangular wall separately and add the results. For gables, calculate the triangle above the wall using half the base multiplied by its height. Large windows and doors should be measured as deductions rather than guessed from floor area.

The calculator adds ten percent after openings are removed. That reserve covers common cuts, overlaps, starter pieces, and a few damaged lengths. A home with many corners, dormers, or decorative transitions may need a larger allowance.

Use the material selector to compare a budget-friendly vinyl direction with fiber cement, wood, brick veneer, stucco, or engineered products. The output is a purchasing estimate, not a replacement for a takeoff from an installer.

Formulas used

Rectangular walls

wall_height × wall_perimeter

Finds the main vertical wall surface from the combined wall run.

Gables

½ × gable_height × gable_width

Adds triangular roof-end surfaces to the wall total.

Order area

(walls + gables − openings) × 1.10

Subtracts major openings and applies a ten percent planning allowance.

Frequently asked questions

What to know before you order.

Is siding measured by floor area?

No. Siding follows the exterior wall and gable surfaces. Floor area can be a rough reference but does not capture wall height, roof shape, or openings.

What does one siding square mean?

One square represents 100 square feet of installed coverage. Packaging and waste still vary by product.

How much waste should I plan for siding?

Ten percent works as a general starting point. Complex facades with many angles may justify more after an installer reviews the elevations.
